We were all given the blue fabric for the pot. White or white on white is required for the background, green for the leaves and then any colors/ patterns can be used for the Posies. I made one more hat this weekend.  I used Cynthia England’s method for Picture Piecing from her book Picture Piecing. Ms England’s method changes all of the curved lines into straight lines which adds a certain dynamic to the piecing. Loquats are an interesting fruit. The flowers appear in the autumn or early winter, and the fruits are ripe in late winter or early spring. The loquat is similar to its distant relative, the apple, and are good for making pies, tarts and crumbles. The fruit is about the size of a ping-pong ball. The ruffler looks somewhat complicated, takes some effort to figure out and get used to and it can be pricey but, believe me, it is worth it. A ruffler is the easiest way to get the best ruffle. T brought me this duvet and asked me to add batting to it and quilt it. So that is what I’m doing.   I ripped out the stitched edges of the duvet, loaded it on the quilting table with the batting and stitched it following the pattern printed on the fabric. All I have left to do is finish up the binding. As the name implies it is copied from a painting by Georgia O’Keeffe, Church Steeple.   I used a frayed edge appliqué technique for it. All of the edges have been stitched down with a very small straight stitch and the edges have been deliberately frayed.  I know that I learned about the technique from a book that I borrowed from the library. I used ideas from  Ruth B. McDowell’s book Pattern on Pattern to create the design. In the book, Ms McDowell suggests laying a pattern in different sizes on top of each other to create sub-patterns.  I like the repetition of shapes.It looks almost as though the shapes are echoes of each other or maybe like they are ripples on a pond. I especially like the fabrics she chose. The background fabric for the stars and the alternating fabrics in the 25 patch blocks are all black on white prints. That gives a continuity to the quilt but still allows for a variation that gives the quilt a touch of “sparkle”.        I also love how she pieced the back.
